JAIL HISTORY:

The Payette County Jail is located at the Payette County Courthouse at 1130 3rd Avenue North, Payette.  The Payette County Jail is a 26-Bed facility, built in 1972.  The population of Payette County has increased 50.4% since 1972.  It is expected to grow an additional 35% in the next 20 years.  This has directly affected our space in the Payette County Jail.

In February of 1999, a Jail Bond was passed for $1.95 million dollars.  Sheriff Barowsky then oversaw the addition and renovation of the existing jail facility.  The total square footage will be approximately 12, 756.  The addition will include an additional 52 beds, along with a laundry area; kitchen facility; a cafeteria/multi-purpose area; and a medical exam/breath testing room.  A new visitation area was added along with an attorney/client visiting room.

Work Release:

If you are sentenced to the Payette County Jail and have received work release from the judge, you must provide the staff with a work schedule on company letterhead.  It cost $25.00 a day to be on work release.

Landfill Recycle Program:

Inmates, who qualify, can be placed at the landfill under direct supervision to sort through the items and pick out the wood, which is turned into mulch, metal that is turned into scrape, and aluminum that is sold on the open market.  By recycling these items it saves a great deal of space in the landfill and thus extends the life of the landfill.

 Other Programs:

The Payette County Jail also provides the following programs to the Inmates:

Spiritual Meetings

  • Educational Programs

  • Substance Abuse Programs

Commissary:

The Payette County Jail provides a fully stocked commissary, so inmates may purchase supplemental hygiene items along with snacks. The profits from these sales are then used to purchase TVs, exercise equipment, and clothing so that the taxpayers of Payette County are not burdened with these costs. If you would wish to place funds on an inmate’s account, you may choose from the following options::

1. Purchase a money order or cashier’s check. Make it payable to the Payette County Sheriff’s Office in care of the inmate’s name. Place the money order or cashier’s check in an envelope that is provided in the lobby of the Jail. Write the inmate’s name on the front of the envelope. Drop it into the green mailbox marked “Inmate Funds” in the lobby. These funds are deposited into inmate commissary accounts on Mondays and Thursdays.

2. A kiosk is available in the lobby of the Jail to deposit funds directly into inmate commissary accounts. The kiosk accepts cash, debit cards, and credit cards. Funds deposited are immediately credited to the inmate’s commissary account avoiding delays during holidays or weekends. There is a fee deducted from the amount of the deposit when using the kiosk. Prepaid phone cards can also be purchased through the kiosk.

Commissary requests are filled on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays

BAIL AND INMATE INFORMATION:

Cash Bond

A cash amount is paid by the defendant to cover the total cost of the bond.  This can be paid in the form of a money order.  Checks are not accepted.

Surety Bond

The defendant or family, friends, etc. must contact a professional Bail Bondsman to post the bond.  The Bondsman has an attached fee for their services and usually requires some type of collateral.  Their fee is generally 15% and they usually require a minimum fee to provide the service.  The Bondsmen are registered through the state and we maintain a list of unacceptable Bondsman who have defaulted on their bonds.

Personal Recognizance Bond:

A dollar amount of the bond is established, however the defendant only has to sign the bond promising to appear on the future court dates.  The defendant must have a mailing address and be approved through the courts or Bond Commissioners.

Book and Release:

The arresting Officer can make a determination that the defendant can be released after they are booked.  This usually occurs with misdemeanor offenders; however, can be done with some felonies.

Sentences: The defendant is released upon completion of his required amount of time of incarceration.  The courts often modify a sentence so releases may occur earlier.
